Dyslexia Information for Families

Ohio law defines dyslexia as a specific learning disorder that is neurological in origin. Dyslexia is characterized by unexpected difficulties with accurate or fluent word recognition and poor spelling and decoding abilities not consistent with the person's intelligence, motivation and sensory capabilities. Difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language. Ohio has mandated that each student in grades kindergarten through third grade beginning in the 2023-2024 school year be screened using an Ohio approved dyslexia screener.

Parents or guardians of students in any grade Kindergarten through twelfth grade can request screening at anytime. The form to request screening is linked here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yhRLPQ-HuE-o0oVau0bg4PyvrdAlK5SVb5thTH86ZQI/edit?usp=sharing

Ohio School Districts can provide an educational classification but not a medical diagnosis of dyslexia. Please see your family physician at your discretion.

For students that are flagged for dyslexia, a second assessment will be administered to give the district more information on the needs of the individual learner. Then, interventions will be provided and monitored by both the classroom teacher and the dyslexia committee.

At Belpre City Schools, teachers will use many different strategies, high quality instructional materials, and evidence-based interventions to follow a developmental sequence of instruction based on reading research, this is called structured literacy instruction.
