Last week Mrs. Edgar accompanied her group of Mock Trial students on a field trip to the historic Washington County Courthouse, where they were able to meet the court staff and experience the ambiance of courtrooms A and B. This was quite beneficial for the students; one of these courtrooms will be where their Mock Trial will occur in January when the court shuts down for the day for the competition! The students were also given the privilege of meeting with two of the Common Pleas Court judges, Judge John M. Halliday and Judge Mark Kerenyi. Both judges were very accommodating, and were eager to answer any questions that the students had. Judge Karenyi stated that Washington County struggles to maintain enough lawyers, and he was hopeful this experience might cause some of our students to consider a career in law to help meet that need! During the time spent in the beautifully maintained courtrooms, the students were allowed time to familiarize themselves with the courtroom layout. They used the courtroom sound system, and even approached the bench to sit in the judge’s chair (see pics)! We believe this field trip was vital to help the students feel more comfortable with the environment, processes and protocols of the courtroom. Please join us in wishing Mrs. Edgar’s students' success as they continue to prepare for their inaugural Mock Trial competition!
